Feature #12486
Consider dropping flattr versus making it more prominent on our website
0%
Description
That’s a possible conclusion from Feature #11298. Note that we shouldn’t spend a lot of time on this seeing the quantity of revenues that we get from Flattr (8.60€/month currently).
U: What do you think? Could this be a worthwhile discussion for a monthly meeting?

Thanks for bringing this up.
I think that Flattr is not really well adopted outside of german speaking countries.
Furthermore, it seems that the company has just been bought by Eyeo, the company developing AdblockPlus in Cologne. They plan to integrate Flattr into Adblock Plus. While blocking advertisements, except for those being integrated on a whitelist (upon payment), this should still allow to see which websites a user visited, and make automatic payments.. Kind of interesting income model. (Source: https://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Adblock-Anbieter-Eyeo-uebernimmt-Online-Bezahldienst-Flattr-3675942.html and http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/adblock-plus-eyeo-uebernimmt-flattr-a-1142156.html) I personally doubt this will work. The first article also states that most people did not get a lot of revenue out of flattr. But Wikipedia says that there are some exceptions during the beginnings (2010-2012).
So, I wonder, instead of putting a flattr button on pages, we might want to decide instead to drop flattr entirely - or keep using it the way we currently do.
Let’s discuss that :)

Putting this again on the agenda of the monthly meeting.
The initial proposal from sajolida was: “Try to put a Flattr button on pages with more views” with description “That’s a possible conclusion from Feature #11298. Note that we shouldn’t spend a lot of time on this seeing the quantity of revenues that we get from Flattr (8.60€/month currently).”

- Type of work changed from Discuss to Website
During https://tails.boum.org/contribute/meetings/201707/ “We decided to try out adding the Flattr button in the sidebar of our website for three months, and if it does not work, we’ll drop it. sajolida will implement this.”
#10 Updated by sajolida 2018-06-04 12:56:19
- Target version set to Tails_3.8
Doing this before the donation campaign would mean doing it now-ish.

If you’re still up for this, I can review your work.

Here is a branch.
If you find time to review this before the release it can save us a full rebuild on the website. Otherwise please reassign it to u.
Today our balance is:

- $47.63

I was going to write “please copy the translations from wiki/src/donate.*.po
” but most of them are wrong or non-existing. Code review passes.

I don’t find the layout pretty, but let’s say it’ll be good enough for this 3 months experiment (and won’t taint the experiment results too much). Merged into web/release-3.8, will go live at the same time as the release!

I’ll evaluate how much we got from that in 3 months → ~ 3.10.

Let’s do this as part of the preparation of the donation campaign so we take a decision to either keep it or remove it completely.

Almost 3 months later, I logged into Flattr today. The results are ridiculous: we’ve been slowly receiving less and less donations through Flattr (between 5 and 8 until September 2017) but none since we put their button on all our web pages with c4a8f60470.
Bye bye Flattr!
