Description

The Mumble client in Tails Wheezy doesn’t work well. Maybe the one in Jessie works better…

FWIW, I set up a mumble server behind a hidden service for easier tails collaboration. Since I already had the server running and I was able to verify that it worked in Debian Jessie (having had a brief Tails oriented talk over Mumble), the next logical step was to try with Tails Jessie…and it worked. :)

To clarify, what worked was

  • I could speak from my workstation running Sid and it was relayed to the client in Tails jessie.
  • I could speak from my client in Tails Jessie and it was relayed to my workstation running Sid.

I haven’t retried in Tails Wheezy—nor with Mumble from Jessie (in case that’ll make a difference)—but may do so in time.

Meh, I was curious so I retried because I wanted to make sure that I
didn’t do anything wrong when testing it before, and no, it’s just that
Mumble really doesn’t work well in Tails Wheezy.

In Tails Wheezy:

  • You can broadcast audio
    - Although using the onboard microphone I had to set it as
“Microphone” instead of the default “Internal Microphone.”
Otherwise the sound the clients you’re broadcasting to will be
really bad and with lots of noise and distortion.
  • You can hear some audio
    - “This is an example of speex…” during the audio tests.
    - with text-to-speech enabled you’ll hear “Server disconnected…”, etc.
    - you cannot hear others.

Installing the Mumble from jessie in Tails Wheezy makes it a bit better,
but to be clear the quality is still not nearly as good as it is in Tails
Jessie itself.

Anyone that wants to use Mumble on Tails may just have to wait for an
upcoming release based on Jessie.

So… this ticket is about testing it in Jessie, and it seems that it “just works”. So the ticket can be marked as resolved, I guess?

Yeap, thanks for the testing. It’s funny because we did it basically the same day in parallel. My results are similar as yours and that’s a very good news: once have Tails Jessie we can do VoIP all over the place!
