Needs to be tackled ASAP while it’s still imaginable to get fixes into Jessie. Any taker?

I’m personally dropping the ball on it for the time being. I don’t know this area well enough, and it’s getting a bit late for fixing stuff in Jessie, especially stuff that should probably be fixed upstream first.
IMO, next step is to read GNOME documentation about accessibility, to learn how people who need a screen reader are supposed to use GNOME these days. Then we can judge whether that’s good enough. (I would prefer being able to directly ask people to try and report back, but given our Greeter is not accessible, it would be a bit lame to throw them onto a known stumbling block).

According to https://mailman.boum.org/pipermail/tails-dev/2015-March/008326.html, Orca works fine in Tails Jessie except for the usual suspects: Tails Greeter and apps that are running from a different UID (Tor Launcher for example).

a user recently pointed out that not being able to set up Tails with orca in the greeter is a really bad thing.

Sure. This is off-topic here, though, and we have a dedicated ticket about accessibility in the Greeter. My understanding is that making it accessible is one of the objectives of the greeter revamp project.

It’s too late to fix such stuff in Jessie so repurposing this ticket to be about “what we can do for Tails 2.0”.
On Bug #8302 we discovered that the situation isn’t as bad as we initially thought, thanks to keyboard navigation. With this new info in mind I’m going to evaluate what kind of regressions we have compared to Tails/Wheezy (if any).

I could not find any substantial regressions. Also, one can now start the screen reader (orca) with the well-known “Alt + Super + S” keyboard shortcut, which wasn’t the case on Tails/Wheezy.
So I’m calling this done.
