@u Not 110% sure why I was just assigned this and/or what my “next action” is here? :) I think most of my points/opinion have already been mentioned on https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/mobile_messaging/ with the exception that I have been using Riot/Matrix quite a bit in Purism with good/bad points. Anyway, do let me know what you expect me to do here. :)

@lamby Oops! Sorry for the noise, I simply wanted to unassign myself and accidentally put you as assignee. Please disregard :)

I would find it usefull adding xmpp to the investigation.
There are several mobile messaging applications that use xmpp, some of them use OMEMO as default encryption.
Since OMEMO is not added into tails pidgin, there is some compability issues. So it’s about messaging using xmpp between tails and mobile.

Speaking about pidgin, there’s a plugin for OMEMO support. Here’s a ticket to add it as official plugin: https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/16801 (there’s even a bounty for it)
The plugin is listed as ‘lurch’ under 3. party plugins: https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins

Here’s an issue about “OMEMO support in tails” https://redmine.tails.boum.org/code/issues/11541

There are also several issues concerned about switching away from pidgin towards an alternative (with xmpp support).
See for example: https://redmine.tails.boum.org/code/issues/8573
