Description

As reported by sajolida on https://labs.riseup.net/code/issues/14504#note-5
Telegram seems to run over Tor & has a Debian package.
We should try running it from Tails.

I’m using Telegram on a daily basis with a Tor proxy, and it works great. Unfortunately, the desktop client doesn’t support end-to-end encryption, only the mobile one does.

Thanks for reporting back! What do you mean by “the desktop client doesn’t support end-to-end-encryption”? Are you referring to this: https://core.telegram.org/tsi/e2ee-simple#2-why-are-there-no-secret-chats-on-desktop-apps ?

So what’s the use of this client then?

Yes, exactly.

The client is used for non-end-to-end encrypted one-to-one and group chats. Some projects are using Telegram instead of IRC because of the smooth user-experience it provides on mobile clients, and some people (like me), are using the desktop client to access them.

https://web.telegram.org/ works from Tails. You need your phone to authenticate.

Voice calls with Telegram work over Tor with the mobile version. I didn’t try that on the desktop version.

Calls on desktop client are working on Tails, but aren’t end-to-end encrypted.

Wow! That’s cool :)

Note that is matches my experience with trying to use messaging
applications from a phone through Tor: Telegram calls work but WhatsApp
and Signal calls don’t.
