Description

The default GNOME desktop environment that is included with Debian is good. However, I think that it would be useful to construct an entirely new desktop environment that is specifically designed for the Tails project. The reason for this is simply about control. A customized version of XFCE or LXDE might offer greater control/security over a long term perspective. Branching from either of these desktop environments, and completing a customized Tails desktop experience, will ensure not only a greater level of control but will also allow for greater compatibility and speed as the project continues to evolve. GNOME continues to require more hardware resources with each new release, and the code itself must continually be looked at. My computer overheats when I am using the Tails live usb and the fan gets quite loud. So, I think that LXDE might be worth looking at as a suitable desktop environment that could be completely overhauled for the purposes of the project. GNOME is very good, but is somewhat big. And, especially since Tails is just a live system, it should be considered a better idea to focus on lighter weight desktop environments that use less system resources.

We try to stay as close as possible to Debian, and have the same defaults. GNOME is well integrated, especially for new Linux users, it’s very well translated, and documented. It also has a lot of users, so bugs are reported, and a lot of developers, so they are corrected.

We are a small team, and we have other priorities than developing - and maintaining - a new desktop. We let our upstreams do that, and we focus on what is specific to Tails (Tor integration, confinement, etc)/
