sycamoreone, any news on that one?

I just started asking some of the people who (I think) were involved in the discussion at 31c3. I will report when there are concrete answers.

Any news? (I’m curious :)

The last news I have is that the plan is still to work on a GUI (Feature #8575) in Q2 of 2015 and that a GUI has priority over IRC support. But I can ask about the state of things again. Also, it seems that agl would be fine with merging a nicely separated GUI into xmpp-client.

I am personally more interested in IRC support, so I will try to follow up on that.

In fact, who did you have in mind to ask when you created this ticket? Maybe I am asking the wrong people :).

> In fact, who did you have in mind to ask when you created this ticket?

  • agl to see if in theory he would be fine with expanding the scope of xmpp-client as wide as supporting IRC
  • Ola Bini to see if his team has plans to work on IRC support for xmpp-client

Ping?

What I know right now is this:

  • agl would be OK with a GUI if it was nicely separated.
  • For Ola Bini and his team a GUI for xmpp-client is a priority. IRC support might be added, but not now. Also they want to change more than “just” adding a GUI, so I think the result will probably end up as a separate project.

Thanks! So, my feeling is that we should do one of:

  • close this ticket (we’ve asked and got an answer);
  • postpone this ticket to 6-12 months in the future so that we look at it again when we’re there; but perhaps we’ll have decided to go with Tor Messenger instead.

=> sycamoreone: your call :)

Yes, I will close this ticket soon, but want to wait till after the CC camp as I hope to talk about this with with a few people there. Bug #8573 already covers the “looking again in the future”.

(Out of curiosity I started using the latest Tor Messenger alpha for a few things recently and while I would like to be able to recommend people a simple and clean xmpp-client based program, I can imagine that in the end using the Tor Messenger will be the better option for Tails. Time will tell.)
