I plan to add a .Desktop file as part of the debian packaging.
It would be a pain to do in the perl packaging. Would that work ?

Sorry, didn’t see the dependency to Feature #7434.

It will add a menu entry, but it will only allow to launch the applet (or a new instance of the applet). The D-Bus back-end would be needed so that launching the app would open the main windows.

I’ll still create the .desktop file but it’s only a small part of the work.

Yes, definitely. That’s how we do it e.g. for tails-persistence-setup.

Is this still the case?

#10 Updated by nodens 2016-06-29 09:28:58

What is ? The absence of proper app with dbus backend ? If so, yes.

In the Debian package, the .desktop file exists and works. It is only needed to replace it with our own version (tor-enabled) when pulling it from Debian (Feature #10190, I see that you set it to in progress, thanks, I will work on it next week).

Will be fixed when Feature #10190 is actually in Tails.

Actually, Bug #11781 shows that I got it wrong. There’s a reason why this ticket (Feature #7435) is a subtask of Feature #7433: at least in the context of Tails, it makes no sense to have a launcher in the Applications menu, until there is actually something (else than the systray icon) to launch. So I’m going to follow-up on Bug #11781 by proposing a patch that hides this launcher for the time being, until the rest of Feature #7433 is done.

We’ll want to revert commit:faab3ca9d486b13421f596fc8c0d9207cb6a64ac in tails.git, once we really want this here.

#18 Updated by sajolida 2016-09-11 02:50:48

The launcher is currently labelled “OpenPGP-Applet” while I think it should be “OpenPGP Applet” (like in the description of the package). I’m not sure what’s the proper way of translating this into Redmine. Shall I mark this ticket as “Confirmed” and “Dev Needed” again?

FYI, it’s fixed in the debian tree (pending next upload. I wouldn’t want to bother a sponsor for small stuff like this only ;) )

@nodens: So basically this is ready since four months but lacks a sponsor? i can sponsor your package. Can you assign this ticket to me if you still need a sponsor?

#22 Updated by nodens 2018-01-28 11:35:44

No, actually it’s been uploaded meanwhile (1.0-2).

It’s just the same issue as outlined in Bug #14982: the fix is in debian (unstable and testing), but not in Tails since it requires updating the snapshot we use.
Once we move the “upstream” issues, the issues here will be changed to reflect this, and hopefully we can make clear what type of work is actually needed :D

Changing the state so it has a chance of being actually fixed someday ;)

Hi,

OpenPGP applet is moving to its new home on https://salsa.debian.org/openpgp-applet-team/openpgp-applet

This issue has NOT been duplicated upstream, as it is a Tails-specific issue

This comment is just to prove it hasn’t been overlooked.

Cheers!

I beg to disagree: this is an important part of Feature #7433 aka. https://salsa.debian.org/openpgp-applet-team/openpgp-applet/issues/1. If that ever gets implemented upstream, we’ll need a .desktop file upstream, that allows starting the OpenPGP Applet without going through a systray icon. What do you think?

I’m not sure it warrant a separate issue, at this stage at least.

How about we just add something to https://salsa.debian.org/openpgp-applet-team/openpgp-applet/issues/1 ? it’s already implied by the description (app is hard to find), but it can be made more explicit.

Fair enough.

Sounds good!

FTR I still don’t understand why “it is a Tails-specific issue”, which is the part I was not agreeing with.
