Description

This wifi adapter/chipset works amazing with kali and has my 2 thumbs up, it would be nice to see it supported in tails as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hi valhrafn,

Please:

  1. retry with MAC address spoofing disabled; if that fails too:
  2. send a report with WhisperBack, referencing this issue (Feature #17504), so we can check where the problem comes from

I suspect fixing Bug #17323 will fix that. If you’re comfortable with the command line and Linux system administration, you could try installing the missing firmware files manually and reloading the relevant kernel module.

Not sure about the link between this one and Bug #17323; rtl8812bu/rtl8822bu seem to be different devices? https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/rtw88/README mentions RTL8822BE and RTL8822CE instead.

I’ll handle the other one first; I’m fine with getting hardware/whisperback report for the rtl8812bu thing, and I can look at what’s happening in Kali to support that if needed.

I haven’t found anything obvious in a Kali image (filenames aren’t always obvious)…

It would be great to get some logs from a system featuring this NIC, so that we have a chance of understanding which driver and which firmware are actually used there.

I used this driver for it in kali…

git clone https://github.com/cilynx/rtl88x2BU_WiFi_linux_v5.3.1_27678.20180430_COEX20180427-5959.git

and used dkms to build and install it. It works good but I could not for life of me (as a fairly new tails user) figure out how to get it working in tails.

Its an amazing NIC, it supports both 2.4 and 5ghz, and also supports monitor mode for packet injection. I made a cantenna out of it and it picks up wifi almost a km away, probably further if I didn’t have buildings in the way.
