a user reported that if UUI is not started with administration rights, checking the “format in fat32” box is ignored with no error or warning popup (beside an error hidden in the logs), and the volume is formated in NTFS (resulting in all kind of errors).

First, note that our instructions point to a version of UUI stored on our website and that I update manually. The last update was to UUI 1.9.7.7 back in May 2. We do this for more security (HTTPS) and also to have a tiny bit more control over the bugs people might face.

So if people follow our instructions, UUI hasn’t changed since May.

That said, I did a bunch of tests tonight for this ticket as well as Bug #13206 and both 1.9.7.7 and the newest 1.9.7.9 work as expected. See Bug #13206#note-20.

As a consequence, I updated the version we serve on our website to 1.9.7.9.

I should do more tests regarding the “administration rights thingie”. On my Windows there is no such a thing but maybe creating a second user would reveal that.

I tested that again today with UUI 1.9.8.0:

  • I created a “Guest” account on my Windows 7.
  • I formatted a USB stick with 1 NTFS partition.
  • I installed tails-amd64-3.5.iso using UUI 1.9.8.0 on this USB stick after checking the “Format in FAT32” option.
  • I got ask for the password of my main account when trying to open UUI, and gave it.

The resulting USB stick had 1 FAT partition and was booting fine.

Marking this ticket as solve then.

Please reopen once you have more information about which particular version of Windows and setup for this “administration” account is required to reproduce the failure described in Bug #14736#note-2.
