Bug #12717
Clarify "intermediary Tails" on /upgrade/tails/
0%
Description
the words “intermediary Tails” can be confusing for some users. usually, this expression is used to describe a Tails device made with dd or UUI, therefore, not a fully featured Tails device.

- Subject changed from clarify https://tails.boum.org/upgrade/tails/ to Clarify "intermediary Tails" as the notions seems to be confusing to users
- Affected tool set to Installation Assistant
This was reported by the help desk, so it seems relevant to actually work on this.
Next steps: see how this can be implemented in the documentation.

Warning: I feel quite defensive on this issue so I hope I won’t sound rude.
For the record, during the design of these instructions we changed from “temporary” to “intermediary” after the user testing in Feature #8589. See Feature #10614.
Granted, this was the last user testing that we did so we didn’t verify that “intermediary” was working better than “temporary”.
But 1.5 years have passed and it’s the first time this issue gets raised. On the other hand, I’ve seen many bugs reports reusing the term “intermediary” appropriately and in a way that seems useful to understand their problem. So right now, this terms seems way more useful than problematic.
Also, I’m not sure to understand your description of this ticket: “this expression is used to describe a Tails device made with dd or UUI, therefore, not a fully featured Tails device”. That’s indeed the case. We use “intermediary Tails” to describe a Tails USB stick installed using dd
or UUI
. I’m not sure to understand:
- What you seems to imply is problematic here.
- Why you said “usually”: is it not used consistently.
So please elaborate as I might have missed something. I would also be very interested in reading myself the report from this user to understand better their confusion. I think that would actually be needed to actually now how to improve on this terminology, if possible.

Reading better the history of this ticket, I understand that goupille was referring to “intermediary” used on https://tails.boum.org/upgrade/tails/ but u removed that information in an unfortunate ticket renaming.
This solves at least part of my concerns :)
@goupille: I still want to read the original report. You can give me a Message-Id of WhisperBack id.

I can’t find the original report (this release was intense and it was a month ago…), but, from what I can remember, the user first installed tails 2.x with UUI, then installed a final tails 2.x with Tails intaller (therefore, learnt about the “not-fully-functional-intermediary-tails” concept in the documentation), then tried to manually upgrade to tails 3.0 following the documentation https://tails.boum.org/upgrade/tails/, but was confused because the doc teach you how to create an “intermediary tails” with tails installer…
since, in Tails language an “intermediary tails” is not just “a Tails used as an intermediary”, but a “Tails not installed with Tails installer”, even if it is not critical, I think that it could be great to find another choice of word in this specific case of a manual upgrade (where you intall a “real” Tails with tails installer to use it as an “intermediary”). Maybe talking about a “second Tails” ?
I hope that helped…

I looked quite hard in my tails-bugs@ archive for the original email but couldn’t find anything. The only three emails that I found on tails-bugs@boum.org including the word “intermediary” between the release of 3.0 and your opening of this ticket were affected by Bug #12696 and that could very well have been the source of the confusion.
So I’ll temporarily reject this ticket. I’m happy to reconsider how serious this issue is if we get other similar reports. Next please point me to the original email.

I got more info from goupille in private and understand better the issue now, thanks for the clarification!
Yes, indeed we use “intermediary” to mean two different things:
- When installing (/install/win/usb), “intermediary” means a Tails USB stick installed using dd or UUI and that cannot have automatic upgrade or persistence.
- When upgrading (/upgrade/tails), “intermediary” means a Tails USB stick installed using Tails Installer and that don’t have your persistent storage.
Still, after we distribute USB images we don’t have “intermediary” Tails anymore when installing and the term will be used only for upgrading:
https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/usb_install_and_upgrade/usb_bootable_disk_image/
Today we learned that our grant application for USB images is doing good, so I propose we reject this ticket once this is confirmed.
