Bug #9752
Update bridges documentation with user feedback
20%
Description
Maybe the documentation doesn’t stress enough that you need to add the bridges at the start, and users think they can change it from the Vidalia settings page.
Also they don’t realise they can copy the bridges lines on a text file and paste it on the Tor config menu when rebooting, making the configuration prone to errors by what Agent Smith would call ‘sending a (hu)man to do a machine’s job’
I think it’s good to make the whole workflow clear:
- Ask for bridges
- Copy them in a file
- Reboot/Choose options
- Choose corrent option
- Copy the file’s contents

Thanks for taking the initiative on this one! Currently, the documentation about bridges is split into two pages:
- “Tor bridge mode” which explains what are bridges, how to use them, what kind of bridges are supported, that you should store them in persistence, etc.
- “Network configuration” which explains when and how to trigger Tor Launcher to appear to enter specific network configuration and thus bridges.
Both sections are currently subsections of “First steps with Tails → Startup Options”.
I think that the confusion here arise from this split. Don’t you think? What I see in your proposal, is an intent to partially duplicate the scope of “Network configuration” into “Tor bridge mode”. I agree than making people jump around pages while trying to understand a process or accomplish a task makes it more complicated. Of course, duplication is bad and the content is here already, but as you pointed out things could be improved…
I feel that “Network configuration” should stay, at least in some form, in the list of options accessible from Tails Greeter to describe what they do.
But maybe “Tor bridge mode” is out of place. Maybe it would be better advertised as a page in the section “Connect to the Internet anonymously”, and renamed “Circumventing censorship with Tor bridges” or something. I hope that nobody will jump on me about the fundamental differences between “anonymity” and “circumventing censorship” here…
Then, to solve the problem you raised you could try to move the second half of “Network configuration” into an inline, referenced from both pages, and see how it looks. See 21f1c54 to see an example of inline. You will surely have to manipulate a bit the text before the inline on both page and check carefully the content, etc.

Emma, maybe you forget to push your changes because I don’t see anything when doing git log origin/master..emmapeel/bugfix/9752-bridges-doc
.
Also, this is highly related to Feature #10280 which is pending for review. I assigned the review to anonym but I think you can steal it from him. Anyway, I’d like to merge Feature #10280 before going back to this ticket.

I think the current Tor configuration assistant that we mention in https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/startup_options/bridge_mode/index.en.html addresses this issue.
