IMO this would only result in increased memory usage and startup time for 99.x% of our users, and the ones who really want a clipboard manager can very well install it themselves (at first glance, gpaste-applet and gnome-shell-extensions-gpaste seem to be the only ones that are properly integrated in GNOME Shell for Tails/Jessie). So I’m in favour of rejecting this ticket.

Hi

First time here folks, so apologies in advance for any discrepencies in using Redmine.

Mentioned this very subject with your support section a couple of days ago. Surprised to find that 01010101 had raised it but thanks anyway.

“IMO ….the ones who really want a clipboard manager can very well install it themselves” …“So I’m in favour of rejecting this ticket.” - IMO this comment smacks of arrogance, pompousness and ignorance while summarily dismissing the proposal without any real investigation, proper consideration or providing a rationale for it. Why?

Here’s why:

Some of your users for security reasons prefer / have no other option but to use Tails on a DVD with no admin privileges thereby nullifying the ability to install anything (at least as a new user that is my understanding).

Not everyone has the knowledge nor the experience to “very well install it themselves” - GNOME Shell for Tails/Jessie - what is that? You are in the best position to genuinely assess and evaluate programs with your internal and intimate knowledge of the Tails environment, its limitations and possible consequences for security and anonymity.

“IMO this would only result in increased memory usage and startup time for 99.x% of our users” - what is your evidence for this? This for instance from the Parcellite website - “Parcellite is a lightweight GTK+ clipboard manager. This is a stripped down, basic-features-only clipboard manager with a small memory footprint for those who like simplicity.” - small memory footprint how does this equate with “increased memory usage and startup time”? Are 99.x% of your users and their machines stuck in the Stone Age of computing?

Package: clipit (1.4.2-1) jessie - (https://packages.debian.org/jessie/clipit) lightweight GTK+ clipboard manager. ClipIt was forked from Parcellite and adds many bugfixes and features to the project. Package Size i386: 51.3 kB, Installed Size 393.0 kB - hardly likely to have any serious impact on memory or startup time IMO.< Probably the preferred option.

Package: glipper (2.4-4 Clipboard manager for GNOME (https://packages.debian.org/jessie/glipper) Package Size: 49.6 kB; Installed Size: 536.0 kB - hardly likely to have any serious impact on memory or startup time IMO.

Package: klipper (4:4.11.13-2) clipboard manager (https://packages.debian.org/jessie/klipper) This package is part of the KDE base workspace module. Slightly larger Package size:137.5 kB but smaller Installed size: 458.0 kB - again hardly likely to have a huge impact on memory or startup time IMO.

So what memory would some of the other presently installed programs use?
Take Screenshot - can’t find the package but gnome-screenshot: Package size: 143.9 kB, Installed size: 714.0 kB - memory and startup time?
gcalctool: Package size: 50.4 kB, Installed size: 90.0 kB memory and startup time?
KeePassX : Package size, installed size, memory and startup time?
Graphic programs: Package size, installed size, memory and startup time?
Sound and Video programs: Package size, installed size, memory and startup time?

Compelling reasons behind the request to include a clipboard manager as part of the distribution:

Efficiency, productivity, organization and automation

Coming from a Windows background I could not do without a clipboard manager which I regard as an essential tool. Not only is it a time saver but it provides and easy and effective way to work productively and without effort. Particularly as my keyboard skills are somewhat limited.

At present with Tails I am having to open up a text file and copy and paste whatever information I want to retain into it. Hardly an efficient way to work.

Provides an accurate and reliable way of entering repetitive information.

Provides a tool for keeping records of information at hand and within easy reach and access.

Can be used safely to keep records of visited websites, as a bookmark manager - particular important with Tails’ amnesia and TorBrowser’s default history settings in mind.

Never lose priceless, valuable bits of code again - use it as backup facility.

Keep yourself organized and be more fruitful.

Let’s face it how often would you use Scribus, Inscape, Pidgin, Audacity etc.. in your daily activities compared to the number of times you copy and paste? And yet a clipboard manager provides an additional, useful tool that can be used effectively in conjunction with all these other programs to aid productivity and organization

Let’s see if you can find other compelling reasons of your own after reading my rationale to review your decision and advocate its immediate use and inclusion in the distribution.

Thanks for listening and look forward to a positive and favourable outcome.

Insulting developers is certainly not a good way to get them to listen to you.

Hello BitingBird

Let me reassure you that my comments were composed with much aforethought and not meant to insult developers but mereley to highlight if forecefully, in my opinion, intrigeri’s rash statements.

No offence was intented and none should be taken.

If it helps I ask you to ignore what you consider as insults and accept my withfrawal of them and to give due, serious consideration to the case that I have put forward in the constructive spirit in which it was meant.
