I really don’t like “flash media”, it mostly makes me think of “flash media player”. Most users have no idea what flash memory is, and media is more high-language, less easily understandable than device. Sadly, I don’t have a better proposition, but could this choice be re-evaluated?

  • Subject changed from Assistant: Clarify terminology for "USB stick", "SD card", "flash media" to Assistant: Clarify terminology for "USB stick", "SD card", "flash memory"

Sorry for the confusion, the proposal is actually “flash memory” (which is in the Apple style guide) and also to introduce this new terminlogy before using it. We make people learn something and this will make the rest of our documentation shorter and always taking SD cards into consideration implicitely.

If you still disagree with that, please answer to the discussion on tails-ux where we decided this:

flash memory is better than flash media. I still don’t like it much, but hopefully I’ll get used to it :)

I’m not convince with the “flash memory”, but I don’t want to go in the big mail thread. I think we could use “USB stick” (or something like) and have a “tip” to say that it’s possible to user SD card as well.

Anyway, I’m ok with “2 flash memories (USB sticks or SD cards of at least 4 GB)” on https://labs.riseup.net/code/projects/tails/repository/entry/wiki/src/install/linux.mdwn?utf8=%E2%9C%93&rev=web%2Fassistant

We’ll see in the tests if it make sense.

I’m not ready to question the outcomes of the terminology thread that late. I wish you had raised concerns earlier if you were not comfortable in participating in it. Let’s try this terminology and user testing will tell us if it doesn’t work. Then, I would be ready to think about it again.

I need to update this ticket with the information for the meeting we had about the wording of Tails Installer. We decided to say “USB stick” everywhere.
