Description

During our tests we spotted:

  • People who thought there was a version of Tails for Windows.
  • People who were not sure which OS to choose because they had different computers at home.

In the second screen of the router we should try to clarify that:

  • Tails is running independently from the OS installed on the computer.
  • We’re talking here about the OS to install from and nothing else.

I would add a minor “I’m using a tablet or a smartphone” path to route people to a dedicated page.

I don’t mind mentioning other OS on that page and make it clear that they are not an option. Still I’m not sure to understand what information would be on the page that you are proposing (apart from saying “it’s not possible”). Could you clarify?

My position here is that operating systems that your cannot install Tails from are not listed. My idea was that if someone thought it was possible to install Tails from Android for example, then the fact that “Android” is not displayed as an option in the list makes it clear that it is not possible.

Yes, say that it’s not possible, and link to work in progress here and elsewhere :

- Mike Perry’s https://blog.torproject.org/blog/mission-impossible-hardening-android-security-and-privacy

- partial support on some tablets
- blog post we gonna write at some time about Tails and handy devices…

I think it’s better to anticipate endpoint and do something with.

Ok, so I’ll consider that the original issue raised in this ticket “Clarify relationship between OS and Tails” is solved by 8c81bdb since you didn’t raise issue on this particular point.

Note that the problem that you are proposing to tackle here is a different thing and currently hypothetical as it hasn’t been raised in neither of the two user testing sessions that we did on the router. So honestly, I’m not really interested in working on this as feel that we have many more urgent things to do. Still, feel free to propose something and I’ll review it and improve on your language. But please, treat this as low priority. I’m creating Feature #10149 to track this.
