Description

As many users are reporting bugs and issues when using Tails on Macbook Pros (Retina) etc.
Woudn’t it be a good idea to establish even really small part of the dev team (I may start it) to contribute on support of Apple architecture for Tails?

Issues detected while using Macbook Pro (in this case Retina 15" late 2013)
Same issues possible on probably all (new?) Apple architectures.

List of issues while using Mac, feel free to contribute on its items

#1 - overheating (may be due to powered down integrated graphic card Intel Iris Pro on boot. Only dedicated is used all the time)
#2 - really intense battery drain, dramatically lower battery life (2-3 hours) due to dedicated GPU all the time

#3 - no HiDPI support
#4 - no HiDPI support in Tor Browser

#5 - impossible to create, upgrade or make bootable drive while running Tails on Mac. Tried +- 24 times, through terminal, tails installer. Even if process is succesSfUl, flash drive (output) doesn’t work.
#6 - errors while checking for upgrades. I can approve this issue. Tried the same network with different device few days ago > upgrade was found and installation was succeSsful. On Mac > Error all the time.

#7 - RAM flush never successful. Never.

All of the issues resulting in:

> impossible to work on without user’s changes

This topic can be used if desired as centralized way to track progress of supporting Tails on Apple architecture.

Indeed, Macs (especially recent ones) are historically poorly supported by Linux (expect perhaps bleeding-edge / rolling distributions, which Tails can’t use as a basis… yet).

Don’t hold your breath waiting for currently active contributors to start such a team, but if you take care of it, great :)

Using one ticket (titled e.g. “Better support Mac XXX”, replacing “XXX” with the name of the exact hardware you mean to focus on) could work: just mark all other tickets (that themselves track specific, well-defined issues and tasks) as blockers of the central ticket, and you’ll get reasonably good tracking => I’m going to close this ticket, and let you create another one that’s dedicated to being “blocked by” other tickets you particularly care about.

Just beware: do not try to use a single ticket to discuss various unrelated matters. It would get totally unusable after a few weeks or months.
