Can be worth adding to https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/installation/, in the same note (or close to) “Tails Installer can only install Tails on a USB stick or SD card of at least 4 GB.”

Now:

  • that same page reads below: “All the data on the installed device will be lost.”
  • I’m not aware of any documented installation instructions on our website that could possibly let people try to install Tails on an already partitioned device => it seems that the (real) problem you’re trying to solve is about people who already don’t read the doc, so I’m not sure if adding more doc will solve it.

I see mostly users that install Tails, understand that everything else will be lost, but then try to add another partition next to it. Right now, nothing says they shouldn’t, and I just would like to clarify that it’s not supported :)

Ah OK, got it now. Since you’ve set Category = Installation and wrote “Tails doesn’t work because”, I thought it was about people trying to install Tails in an existing partition, which is a very common way to have a Tails that doesn’t boot.

So actually this has little, if any, to do with installation — right?

It has to do with install, not in the traditional sense. We need to make clear that users have to dedicate a USB to Tails before they install it (if their crazy plan is to install Tails and then something else, they should be dissuaded early and have an occasion to pick a smaller USB just for Tails instead).

OK, now I’m fully convinced — hopefully this helped specific the problem we’re trying to solve here :)
