Description

Idea

Allow users who use mainly (and / or) combination of mouse / touchpad and keyboard to navigate within Tails quickly and flawlessly.
User can set shortcuts in system settings but it could be a good idea to set few extra / fundamental as default.

Security reasons?

If developers haven’t set these / extra shortcuts by default for security or other reasons,
feel free to delete this ticket as its only an idea how to improve accesibility and use of Tails.

Shortcuts?

  • Terminal
    gnome-terminal
    CTRL + ALT + T
    any other if conflict appears

In my opinion required thing by many, to be able to start terminal with shortcut

  • Minimize Window
    SUPER / WIN + H
    any other if conflict appears

Currently disabled, probably good idea to allow users to quickly hide (minimize) window with shortcut. Faster operating in the system coming hand in hand with it.

Contextual shortcuts?

Set shortcuts to get quickly into Applications and Places menu entries in top bar?

  • Places
    CTRL + SHIFT + P
    any other if conflict appears
  • Applications
    CTRL + SHIFT + A
    any other if conflict appears

Since once you are in that menu you can already just type the first letter of the entry to activate it, it is probably useless to make shortcuts for those.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I think that most of that should be proposed and changed to GNOME upstream because there is nothing specific to Tails in this. Also note that defining custom shortcuts but be more tricky than it seems as they might interact badly with other existing shortcuts without us realizing. On the other hand, this might not make sense to push this upstream to GNOME either because, with GNOME Shell, those shortcuts could be executed using the Meta key. For example, Meta + ter opens a terminal.

We will ship GNOME Shell in Tails based on Debian Jessie (first half of 2016), so I’m afraid that we won’t spend our energy on working on that since it will be made pointed in a bit.

Agree, probably too general query with not so (if any) impact.

Agreed with this (and with the rest of your reasoning) => closing.
