Will we want to migrate it to the same windows version, or a newer ?

#4 Updated by alant 2014-12-02 13:56:36

I propose we stay on windows 8:

- it’s still the current version;
- it means we could keep (most of) the GTK+ and icon theme and only update the gnome-panel theme to GNOME Shell.

About implementation :

- I think having a desktop looking like windows 8 desktop shouldn’t be too hard. I didn’t find such a pre-made theme. I’s probably about writing a custom shell extension, inspired by GNOME’s “classic” set of extensions;
- mimic windows 8 metro interface in GNOME Shell activity view looks doable but harder for me. I didn’t find anything on the web.

Currently discussing on -dev@ how we’ll be prioritizing this.

Assigning to Alan (the responsibility to take this discussion to a conclusion, not necessarily to fix the problem by himself :)

  • Blueprint set to https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/update_camouflage_for_jessie/

It has been decided to:

* focus on everything else that’s on our way towards releasing
Tails/Jessie
* not consider the possible lack of Windows Camouflage as
blocking the initial Tails/Jessie release
* specify how Tails/Jessie’s Windows Camouflage should look
like, and put the implementation ideas and pointers we have into
a blueprint
* make the two first above points clear, e.g. in a blog post
calling for help and pointing to the blueprint => if volunteers
show up, then awesome, Alan can give them a hand while focussing
primarily on other Tails/Jessie -related tasks

I first draft of this blueprint is linked (https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/update_camouflage_for_jessie/). Once it is agreed next step is to issue a blog post about this.

I think these two problems can be worked on separately.

We explained things, made a callout, and got no answer. I resent it to tails-dev today. I think that there is nothing more to do then, and that we should officially drop camouflage. Other opinions?

I fully agree with your analysis and plan.

Indeed, but even giving up will require some work. Next steps that I can think of:

  1. wait a couple more weeks (a ping was just sent to tails-dev@, so we don’t want to bother doing the work described below immediately, do we?)
  2. remove all camouflage -related code, documentation, and tests; this includes the Greeter and perhaps some screenshots.

Given the recent launch of Windows 10, we’ll likely have much better luck with a theme based on that. Actually, I’ve found this:

It looks promising! This theme seems to match the screenshots I’ve seen of Windows 10 quite nicely, even better than our current Windows 8 theme vs the actual thing, imho. Also, it is actively developed. Perhaps we can even ask its developers for help if needed?

What do you think, alan?

Well, I think we do: their theme supposedly required Gnome 3.16, but we’ll be stuck on 3.14. Lacking an email address I used the website’s contact form and directed the developer to our initial call for help, and asked if s/he/they would be interested in porting the theme to 3.14.

Ok, so hi to all of you,

I’m the developer in question xD

I announce I’m willing to help plus I’ve tried Windows 10 Theme on GNOME 3.14 and it looks fine. I just want to tell you that if you wish a more windows-10 look you should go for cinnamon as DE but I’m not a programmer so I’ll shut up

Here a little look at how it looks on GNOME vs the real windows

vs

EDIT : It’s my first time so sorry if pictures look weird

  • Target version deleted (Tails_2.0)

The Windows camouflage code + doc + test suite have been removed from feature/jessie so dropping from the 2.0 view. I’ll let Alan update this ticket’s metadata the way he sees fit, or deassign himself.

#23 Updated by Elbullazul 2015-12-24 12:19:19

why dropped?

Because we have deadlines for releasing Tails/2.0 and that the work on integrating the camouflage in Tails code was not done.

If you or anyone is interested to propose a branch that reintroduces the camouflage, that would be awesome. Please note that it’s not only about proposing a prototype with screenshots, but also integration in Tails code. We’ll be happy to provide guidelines and help, but will not do the work ourselves.

Please do not comment in this ticket anymore, but use Feature #10830 if you wish to keep on working in this feature.

You’ll want to revert commit:4ee37d4 as well, I think.

I think it would be a mistake to revert that commit.

Closing.
