Description

It seems that Florence hijacks the notification bar for its icon, which doesn’t work so well in GNOME Shell.

Next thing to do is to check whether the latest upstream release is in Jessie, maybe a fix is ready upstream. Otherwise, we should make sure this bug is reported upstream, and either have Florence properly support GNOME Shell, or find another virtual keyboard that’s better integrated in there.

Reported as https://bugs.debian.org/764139. Not seen any related change upstream, but I haven’t looked very seriously.

Supposedly fixed in 0.6.2-1. Note that the default GNOME Shell’s virtual keyboard seems to be pretty good, and very well integrated — maybe we should just switch to it?

So, with Florence 0.6.2-2, there’s now a floating icon on the desktop that allows to pop the virtual keyboard up and down. However, that floating icon is an empty gray window: https://bugs.debian.org/764455. Supposedly fixed in sid (0.6.3-1).

The TopIcons extension that was mentioned on Bug #8051 might be an acceptable kludge if we don’t manage to fix all such things in time for Tails/Jessie.

Indeed, fixed in sid => we now install that version in feature/jessie.

Since the floating icon interferes with the automated test suite, I have pushed commit 992cc82 as a workaround. It should be reverted once we have a proper solution.

Workaround’d with the topIcons extension. I’m not too happy with that, but OTOH I doubt that we’ll want to prioritize migrating all the applets we use out of the notification area, so this will do for the time being. I don’t think this will work forever, so it would be good if someone took care of Feature #8281.
