Yes, users ask this all the time.

> Yes, users ask this all the time.

… and IIRC we have a pretty good answer to this in some salvaged forum thread.

  1. id=“…” should not have spaces
  2. use backticks around apt-get etc., not single quotes
  3. “If you manually upgrade the system” isn’t clear whether it’s about APT upgrades or Tails upgrades, since that’s exactly how we call Tails upgrades, while here you’re talking of APT ones
  4. regarding manually installed packages: not needed iirc, the additional software thingie upgrades these packages itself

Thanks for the patch!

I rescued your commit in a dedicated branch: faq/7926-apt-get-upgrade. Please work on this one now.

  • What about simplifying the title and give from granted that people that know what `apt-get upgrade` is, already know that `apt-get update` is needed before that? Then we could skip mentioning `apt-get update`.
  • What about also mentioning Synaptic, as people used Synaptic might not know what `apt-get upgrade` is?

It’s needed only in highly-customized systems such as Tails, so I don’t think we can take this for granted.

We can maybe remove the “update” from the title, but definitly not from the explanations, as most users who don’t manage to install additional software fail because they didn’t update first, so it isn’t self-evident for lots of users. Mentionning synaptic would be a good idea. I’ll go back to it :)
