Bug #7925
Explain how to monitor the network traffic
0%
Description
That was a pretty frequent topic on the old forum:
- Connections blocked by the firewall appear in `sudo dmesg`.
- From inside Tails it is possible to run `netstat` and `tcpdump`.
- Wireshark
We can probably find an external documentation about doing all that on Linux…
Mention that Tor can generate network activity (and make switches blink) even when no client application is active.

I think this FAQ also needs to point to good basic documentation about networking, TCP/IP in general, and firewalling on Linux: those who are already knowledgeable in this area also generally know netstat and friends, so this FAQ seems to be aimed at people who don’t know these tools yet, and also wouldn’t know how to understand their output either.

I think explanations about network monitoring don’t go in the FAQ, but in Advanced Topics. Still, it needs to be written anyway :)

- Yes, this doesn’t fit in the FAQ (unless we only point to an external documentation).
- This is low priority: I don’t see us working on this ourselves any time soon.
