Bug #7800
Cannot mount NTFS filesystem on hardware-write-protected USB stick with Disk Utility or Nautilus
0%
Description
A user reports being unable to read a hardware write-protected USB stick formatted with NTFS.
He tried to mount it from Nautilus, where he gets the error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 18: Error opening '/dev/sdh1': Read-only file system
Failed to mount '/dev/sdh1': Read-only file system
He can read it when mounted with the hardware switch for write protection OFF, though.
Desired results
He should be able to open the partition read-only.

What happens if they try to mount the filesystem with mount -o ro
? Knowing that would help find out if there’s a bug or missing feature in Nautilus/udisks, or lower in the stack (ntfs-3g).

User reports that
mount -t ntfs -o rm,ro /dev/sdh1 /home/amnesia/Persistent/test
was able to open the (switch) write-protected USB stick

Thanks! So, it’s possibly a limitation in udisks or the way Nautilus uses it.
Can this be reproduced on current Debian testing/sid?

Sorry, I haven’t found USB sticks with write protection switch around here. I cannot test it.
Although I could open with `mount -o ro` an NTFS USB stick formatted from GParted installed in Tails
