Description

Since the Windows 8 camouflage just looks ugly and false, there might should be a theme choice for additional XP in the login options, although it’s out of support in real.
XP looked great on former Tails versions - and at least choosing it would let you look like a noob in the public and - not like a Tails pro ;-)

  • Subject changed from Windows appearance choice to Propose Windows camouflage for different Windows versions
  • Status changed from New to Confirmed

While moving to Tails based on Debian Wheezy, we moved to GNOME 3. The Windows XP theme that was used in Tails < 1.1 was based on GNOME 2 and doesn’t work anymore in GNOME 3. So we had to write a new theme from scratch and decided to do that for Windows 8. Having another option for a Windows XP theme in Tails 1.1 would mean writing another theme from scratch as well.

I think we could be interested in having other theme for other versions of Windows but that’s probably not something we are going to work on ourselves since we are very busy with other priorities.

  • Type of work changed from User interface design to Code

(Given we already had a WinXP theme that looked good, I don’t see what this has to do with UI _design_. “Only” implementing an UI is needed.)

Another user reports needing windows XP camouflage.

Different camouflages are important to camouflage between the windows in a library, internet cafe, etc…

She claims that ‘most windows have XP or windows 7, so please include windows xp and 7 for next release’

XP has been discontinued since 2008. I sincerely hope that more and more computers will stop using it.
Seven has been discontinued since 2011 and there are no more machines sold with it.

So, frankly, i understand the request, but i cannot see any valuable reason to put any effort into going backwards :)

Full ACK. Patches are welcome, but in this specific case, the patch’d better be very good and come with a commitment to maintain the WinXP support, otherwise I don’t see us carrying the maintenance workload.

We don’t ship Camouflage at all currently & we might want to reject this ticket at some point, because it sounds more like a Christmas Shopping list item currently :)
