Description

We’re discovering more and more GNOME Fallback bugs (e.g. Bug #7249 and Bug #7248). when migrating to Wheezy. My experience with GNOME Flashback on sid does not indicate that things are getting any better, which is unsurprising considering basically nobody is interested in actively maintaining this code (the Debian GNOME team said they would, for Jessie, but I guess they’re busy with other priorities).

One alternative we should consider for Tails/Jessie is to use the GNOME Shell “Classic” mode, which is basically GNOME Shell, looking mostly like GNOME3 Fallback.

Of course, it requires hardware that can run GNOME Shell. This is supposed to be a mostly solved problem for VMs (thanks to the Cirrus and QXL KMS drivers), and for older hardware as long as enough CPU power is available (LLVMpipe), but we should check that it would indeed be a credible solution, while Jessie is still being developed.

All tests were successful, so I’m declaring this investigation done, and will push my changes to feature/jessie that switch it to GNOME Classic.
