Bug #6898
Don't point to the Tor support channels in Tor Launcher
0%
Description
For the moment, the initial screen of Tor Launcher appears when choosing to configure proxy, firewall, or bridges from Tails Greeter. This includes the sentence “For assistance, contact help@rt.torproject.org”.
The Tor help desk can foresee this causing problems for them, and ask us remove it.

- Category set to Spoof MAC
- Status changed from New to Confirmed
- Assignee set to anonym
Assigning to anonym, as this is part of the “fallout” of the new bridge mode implementation.

- Priority changed from Elevated to Normal
Actually, this request does not has a full consensus on the Tor side. So moving this to normal priority.

- Assignee deleted (
anonym) - Target version deleted (
Tails_0.23)
Dropping the target version and assignee for now. It’s now way too late to fix this in 0.23, and we’ll see if the Tor support people complain.
Besides, it’s unclear to me where we should point Tails users to, instead: at the time this information is displayed, Tails is not connected to the Tor network yet.

It’s been 6 months, so maybe this would be time to ask Tor people if they had such reports from Tails users and what is their position on this now ?

Sure. You just volunteered :P

I asked, and apparently, Tor helpdesk has a template “ask to Tails people”. It has been used 19 times in March 2015, so that’s not huge, but still big enough that such a change would probably be nice :)

Indeed. That template has also been used:
- 7 times in January 2015
- 5 times in December 2014
- no idea for February, I couldn’t find the Tor help desk’s report
I guess the next step is to research what we should do about this. As said earlier, merely pointing to a different email address doesn’t seem applicable to the Tails use-case. Perhaps we should simply add a boolean option to Tor Launcher, that allows us to opt-in for hiding the “For assistance…” widgets?

Bug #6893: Skip the first screen of Tor Launcher added
#11 Updated by BitingBird 2015-04-14 16:50:40
Just added a relashionship to Bug #6893, that is about hiding this first screen completely, so maybe that’s the easy solution.

Note that Tor Launcher is only seen by people who activate additional Tor configuration in the Greeter. The information that we miss here is to know how much of those requests actually from that indication in Tor Launcher (so most probably from people using bridges).
- If that percentage is high, then solving this should get a higher priority.
- If that percentage is low, then we should investigate what else need to be fixed to have less Tails-related requests sent to Tor.

I’m unsure about the current status of this ticket.
