Description

In Tails 0.20, on every Iceweasel startup (including the 2nd one etc. during a given GNOME session), it connects to check.torproject.org (as seen in Vidalia network map).

We already have versioncheck_enabled=false. Setting versioncheck_url=“about:blank” and test_url=“about:blank” does not change the behaviour.

Reproduced with tor-browser-gnu-linux-x86_64-2.3.25-12-dev-en-US.tar.gz.

#1 Updated by BitingBird 2014-03-14 17:54:50

  • Subject changed from Connects to check.torproject.org on startup to Torbutton should not connect to check.torproject.org on startup

renaming because the title was misleading

#2 Updated by intrigeri 2014-08-09 15:21:56

  • Subject changed from Torbutton should not connect to check.torproject.org on startup to The browser should not connect to check.torproject.org on startup

So in the end, Torbutton is not to blame: HTTPS Everywhere is the one that initiates this connection.

https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/9693 This is the corresponding ticket on Tot’s bugtracker.
I’ve not verified the current status of this either in Tails nor in the upstream code of the browser extension.
