There are 3 icons on the desktop:

  • Trash
  • Tails documentation
  • Report an error

They are not “files” per se but shortcuts to applications in Tails (and the trash). As such they cannot be deleted or wiped (other applications cannot be wiped either).

The files in the trash are only stored in RAM, the amnesic part of Tails, which is automatically wiped when Tails is shut down. As such, wiping the trash wouldn’t provide additional security to emptying it.

Maybe I understand your point now!

It’s actually possible to place files on the desktop yourself. For example, through the “Desktop” shortcut in the sidebar of the Files browser. And then, yes, many of the options available in the Files browser are not available when doing right-click on the file on the desktop. For example: “Wipe”, “Remove metadata”, “Encrypt…”.

If so, @baxc: how do you usually place files on the desktop like this?

@sajolida

I just copy-paste files to desktop and now most options are not there including ability to wipe them

I have seen other tickets talking about some missing options in right click menu on desktop like open in terminal, so perhaps all those tickets can be merged
