Done!

It has seen 10 releases in 16 years and the last one was in June 2019. In the past years there has been around 1 release each year. So it’s still maintained but little energy is put into it.

In terms of UX, it’s pretty simple but I’m worried about the following glitches:

  1. It has a portable version: GOOD!
  2. It automatically calculates hashes when selecting the image. We will have to give the SHAAAA! otherwise will get us into troubles on our help desk.
  3. It doesn’t take into account USB sticks that are plugged in after Rawrite32 is started.
  4. The file choose doesn’t list IMG files by default.
  5. At the end, it gives a different hash written to disk than the image. That’s weird and will get us into troubles on our help desk.
  6. Download is 2.2M vs 76M for Etcher and 12M for Win32 Disk Imager.
  7. Writing time is 5m25s which is good.
  8. It doesn’t do a verification pass like Etcher does.
  9. The USB stick boots fine but I’m not sure how to check the integrity of the data (doing sha512sum on the device or the partition doesn’t seem to work but maybe I did something wrong).

So Rawrite32 would be a good alternative to Etcher if (7) is solved or we can prevent it from displaying hashes by default (2), until then it will scare people.
