Steps to reproduce:
- Start Tails
- Run systemctl status rng-tools.service
- Error:
● rng-tools.service
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/rng-tools; generated)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Thu 2019-01-03 07:38:33 UTC; 4 days
Docs: man:systemd-sysv-generator(8)
- What should happen: service is running.

FTR, I’ve reproduced this (on bare metal) while testing 4.2.2. This suggests that config/chroot_local-patches/rngd-dont-fail-if-no-hardware-rng-device.diff
is not always sufficient. I’ve added set -x
to the initscript and it turns out that the finddevice
function finds /dev/hwrng
, which indeed exists, but then starting rngd
with -r /dev/hwrng
fails. I don’t think it’s worth spending more time on this, so I’ll add this as an error that’s safe to ignore in our manual test suite.
