Description

a user reported that Tails doesn’t start anymore on that computer (https://www.zotac.com/us/product/mini_pcs/ci327-nano) since the upgrade to 3.9.1

the boot process stops after the boot menu with the following error :

[12.111277] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page found
[12.111343] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
ata2.00: excepting Emask 0x0 SAct 0x4 SErr 0x50000 action 0x6 frozen
ata2: SError: { PHYRdyChg CommWake}
ata2.00: failed command: read FPDMA QUEUED

I though about an hardware issue, but the user tried with several devices (SD cards and USB sticks) that are working on other computers are still experience this error.

Tails 3.8 starts correctly on that computer.

I found the following pages about this :

This looks like a kernel regression to me. Tails 3.9.1 did not upgrade the kernel but 3.9 did (4.15 → 4.17).

I doubt the Tails boot medium matters since that’s an ATA error.

I’ve asked the OP to try a few thigs.
