Description

I could not reproduce this ticket yet because of my setup, but the number of reports makes me think it is not a conspiracy :)

Users are complaining of having lost their bookmarks ‘menu’.
Even when the bookmarks are still inside the Tor Browser, the menu shows up empty.
If you dig around in the hamburguer menu you can find them, though.

It seems to be some forgotten menu button.

What/where is that “menu”?

I think the issue is that adding a bookmark to the bookmark toolbar doesn’t seems to work anymore. at least they are added to the ‘bookmarks toolbar’ section but they do not appears in the toolbar. so I assume ‘bookmark menu’ is indeed ‘the bookmarks toolbar’.

OK, I’ve looked into this and indeed there’s a concept of “Bookmarks Menu” and “Bookmarks Toolbar”. We hide both by default in Tails 3.9.

  • Once I opt-in to display the “Bookmarks Menu”, it works just fine.
  • Once I opt-in to display the “Bookmarks Toolbar” (Library → Bookmarks → Bookmarking Tools → View Bookmarks Toolbar) and add a bookmark to the bookmarks toolbar, that toolbar is displayed but it is indeed empty. To make it display the expected content I need to right-click on the toolbar, click “Customize”, and drag’n’drop “Bookmarks Toolbar Items” to the toolbar.

So I think this bug report initially used erroneous terminology. Fixing that.

Dear help desk, please try to reproduce on pristine Tor Browser outside of Tails. If you can reproduce it there, then try to reproduce on pristine Firefox 60 ESR:

  • If you can reproduce it there, then that’s Mozilla upstream material, please report there.
  • Else, please report to Tor Browser upstream.

And if that’s a Tails specific bug, please reassign to me :)

After upgrading to 3.9 bookmars sabed in the bookmark toolbar disappear from the toolbar, but not form the menu. See attached images

it is reproducible on a pristine Tor Browser on Debian-live, not with firefox 60 on the same OS.

I opened a ticket on tor browser’s bug tracker :
