We think that it would be nice to have because it makes it easier for new and existing contributors to see the project’s activity.

GitLab CE now has issue boards (e.g. https://0xacab.org/jvoisin/mat2/boards). But they seem quite basic in CE, compared to what EE gives.

There are also multiple external Kanban tools that use GitLab’s API to use issues track in GitLab as their data source.

community edition (the fully FOSS version that one can run themselves) vs. the enterprise edition (partly proprietary, various pricing levels, some of the functionality available for free — as in free beer — on the gitlab.com hosted service)

In terms of kanban/issue tracker/task organizer taiga.io is worth a look into.
It also has gitlab integration and can be selfhosted since it’s opensource.

It’s the most rich tool for that kind of stuff, while still being easy to use, that I am aware of
