I vote that the “ISO image” terminology be retained. “ISO image” seems to already be recognized as referring to a disc image. See, for example:

Apple: “Create an ISO image for Boot Camp from Windows installation media”[1]
Microsoft: “Download Windows 10 Disc Image (ISO File)”[2]

[1] https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203909
[2] https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Apple doesn’t even define what an ISO image is. Microsoft indicates, in parenthesis, that an ISO file is another name for a disc image.

In February we’re going to rethink what kind of disc image (!) we distribute. It’s not obvious that we’ll keep distributing an ISO9660 disc image. So I would suggest you folks don’t spend too much time on this topic right now :)

As part of https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/usb_install_and_upgrade/usb_bootable_disk_image/ we’ll change the terminology to be:

  • USB image for the disk image that is meant to be copied on a USB stick. See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_image.
  • DVD image for the ISO image that will only be meant for people using DVDs or virtual machine (and virtual DVD drives). The term DVD image should not be problematic for people who are otherwise used to ISO image and will help us transition from having a single download for everybody (ISO) to having two downloads depending on the final medium (USB & DVD).

I’m happy!
