Description

Keywords: NV110 family, Maxwell, NV124 (GM204) chipset. See the parent ticket if you need details. Symptoms: the Greeter doesn’t start (Tails 3.0~beta3), or graphics operation are so slow it’s unusable (some Tails 2.x). As said on Bug #11831#note-81 I don’t see what we can do about it, so please add this to the Known Issues page, so that people get a chance to learn about this before they buy a fancy new laptop.

https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/#nv110familymaxwell and https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/ have some background info & terminology.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve seen a WhisperBack report (1303650f57d2aa0c9d736f8ed1189c94) that implies that passing nouveau.noaccel=1 on the Kernel cmdline fixes the issue (probably you get some performance issues though). Documenting this workaround would be nice, ideally after confirming the fix with some other user.

  • Subject changed from Document that NVIDIA Maxwell series graphics cards are not supported to Document workarounds for NVIDIA Maxwell series graphics cards
  • Status changed from Confirmed to In Progress
  • % Done changed from 0 to 10

And Bug #11831#note-98 teaches us that on 3.0~rc1, nouveau.modeset=0 fixes the problem (except HDMI output still doesn’t work) with a GeForce GTX 970M. So IMO we should document both as possible workarounds, i.e. have users try each until they find one that works.

Setting as “In Progress” as we now know exactly what to document.

  • Priority changed from Normal to High
  • Target version set to Tails_3.1

We got 5-8 reports about this and the real fix can’t be shipped before 3 months (Tails 3.2).
