You have not reported anything to my github repository. I found this page by chance.

The extension is simple and working on plenty of Gnome versions and distributions.

I don’t know what’s wrong with Tails, but I would have expected that you try to work with me to fix it.
I would appreciate to get the logs when it is failing, so that I can help you and improve the extension.

The attitude “let’s drop it” or “let’s make our own” is quite unfriendly.

Indeed, sorry about that. I can explain why this didn’t happen, but of course that’s no excuse:

  • The problem seems to appear pretty much randomly (smells like a race condition) and I dislike reporting bugs without at least the beginning of a reproducer.
  • We don’t include TopIcons Plus in our current stable (2.x) series. We switched to TopIcons Plus on our WIP 3.x branch in order to try it out, and it’s not 100% clear whether it’ll be in Tails 3.0. We often test / benchmark a number of options before picking the one we think is best; starting a conversation with the upstream authors of every option we’ve considered is definitely not something we have the resources to do. I don’t think anybody {is,can reasonably be} expected to do that anyway.

I can confirm this, as a happy user of TopIpcon Plus on my non-Tails GNOME unstable desktop :)

If we decide to stick to TopIcons Plus (not sure but likely on the short-medium run), we will definitely get in touch with you regarding any serious issue we’re experiencing! So far this problem hasn’t occurred very often, so it’s not been handled by high priority.

> The attitude “let’s drop it” or “let’s make our own” is quite unfriendly.

Rest assured that we have no plans of making our own TopIcons-like extension. We dislike reinventing wheels and adding to our delta vs. upstream, which is one of the reasons (I think) why our project has outlived most similar ones :)

Regarding “let’s drop it”, actually I disagree: in our job, sometimes the best option is to remove something one can live without, instead of investing time in debugging/fixing it. Everyone works with limited resources and has to choose as wisely as we can how we use them.

This being said: sorry again! I can totally empathise with how you felt when discovering this ticket by chance.

I haven’t seen this recently, so dear help desk: can you please tell me, a few weeks after 3.0 is released, whether anyone complained about it? For the record, TopIcons is the extension that makes the Florence and OpenPGP Applet icons appear on the top right of the screen.

Help desk has never heard of it, possibly only affected only our test suite. anonym & bertagaz, if you see this happen again, let’s gather more debugging info and reopen.
