Description

NOTE: This is one of a series of usability issues that arose from the TAILS OS training workshop on March 19th, 2016 in New York City.

When pressing the option key to boot a Tails DVD in an Apple computer, the DVD label for the TAILS option read “Windows.” This confused a number of people who thought that they made a mistake in creating the TAILS DVD. A suggestion would be to have it read “TAILS” and not “Windows” to avoid confusion.

i can confirm this. but as far as i can tell, this is a problem with apples bootmanager wrongly labelling everything ‘Windows’ thats not osx (tested also with another bootable linux distribution). and we point that out in the instructions: https://tails.boum.org/install/mac/dvd/index.en.html

  • Start date deleted (2016-06-13)
  • Type of work changed from User interface design to Research

This is what we documented in the new instructions, see:

I also think it’s a pity but we would need more research on how we could get Mac OS X display something else than Windows.

Some Mac do that (or at least did) and some other don’t.

For the time being, we mentioned this in the installation doc but I’m not sure that we can fix this in Tails. So I’m rejecting.

Please reopen if you understand why som Mac computers display “Windows” and maybe we can fix that.
