Bug #11527
Universal USB Installer Screenshot confused for actual App
0%
Description
NOTE: This is one of a series of usability issues that arose from the TAILS OS training workshop on March 19th, 2016 in New York City.
When running through the tutorial for Windows users, the Universal USB Screenshot here:
https://tails.boum.org/install/win/usb/index.en.html was confused a few times for an actual app when it “expands” on mouse over. A few things that may prevent the confusion:
- Remove expanding effect.
- Make that particular screenshot 25% to 30% smaller so it’s more immediately noticeable that it’s not part of the OS and just a graphic.

We get little feedback on Redmine from trainers like you’re doing but that’s highly appreciated!
You’re saying “App” like a smartphone app so I understand that this happened only to people who were viewing this page from their smartphone, is that so?
We didn’t experience this while doing UX testing on the same scenario before the release, but by that time these pages were not really responsive and we provided a spare laptop to testers, so the testing conditions on smartphone were not very good and I totally believe you.
I think that we added the expanding effect to help with screenshots that were too big to be displayed at full size. But if we can render the expanding effect unnecessary by scaling down the relevant screenshots I would be in favor of removing it everywhere.
Shall I try to do this?
Note that if you’re knowledgeable about CSS and Git, feel free to volunteer (and as for guidance if needed) :)

I suspect that huertanix meant App as a shortcut for “the Universal USB Installer application window”, and that this is not smartphone-specific: I opened that page on a laptop, and indeed it’s not super obvious to me how one is supposed to tell which is which, between the maxizimed screenshot and the actual application window, when both are open at the same time, which is precisely supposed to happen at one point during the installation process.

What intrigeri said; I meant “app” as in desktop Windows application. The user was using Windows and the image of the window made them think it was the actual application. Scaling down the relevant screenshots would be great.

I’m killing two drones with one stone here and tackling this in the same branch as Feature #12499.
So I’m assigning this to spriver for her review as well so she gets better the context.

I’m all fine with the change, I like it the new way, but shall we also implement this for other applications during the installation of Tails (e.g. the screenshot of Tails Installer)?

I thought about this as well and I also think it would be nice. And then I tried quickly and realized that it would be more work than I was ready to spend on this :)
I think the way forward is to remove the zooming effect on all img.screen (git grep 'class="screenshot' -- "*.*m*"
) in /install.
That would also imply preventing the translations to go fuzzy, etc.
If you want to keep this on our radar feel free to create a separate ticket for that.
