Description

I found this superuser.com post which explains what this additional button in my GNOME status menu is:
http://superuser.com/questions/830356/gnome-3-14-system-menu-new-button

So it seems that it’s the “rotation lock”. I have this button at least on two different laptops, which both do not show this button in my other Debian (Stretch) with GNOME shell. Maybe this was fixed in GNOME between Jessie and Stretch.

Subject: System menu shows rotation lock button even when no accelerometer is present

On Jessie, this icon is always displayed, and updated depending on stuff happening on the org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Orientation D-Bus interface (if I got it right):

While on sid, the icon is only displayed if an accelerometer is detected, which seems more subtle: https://sources.debian.net/src/gnome-shell/3.20.1-1/js/ui/status/system.js/?hl=273#L265

So this will be fixed in Tails 3.0 for free => encoding this in Redmine.

I suggest we don’t spend any time patching this on Jessie, as the resulting benefit would be very short-lived (IMO that’s exactly the kind of things that suck good energy we could instead put into more long-term things, like improvements that will still be useful in a year, or into ensuring that next Debian is good for us).
