i’ve changed the broadband connection section in the network setup page incorporating the instructions to nm-connection-editor

I’m not sure to understand the problem you’re trying to address here.

On the ticket you’re talking about “DSL” which would be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_subscriber_line. I’m not sure what this would mean in the context of Tails as people getting Internet through DSL usually have a DSL home router. I don’t think you can plug you phone line directly in any laptop and get Internet from there.

But in your branch you’re modifying the section about “mobile broadband network” which would be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_broadband. I used 3G USB dongles myself sometimes with Tails and they work from Network Manager as currently described in the doc. See also screenshot in attachment.

So can you clarify which precise scenario you were following and required going through the command line?

Yes, sorry, i accidently mixed DSL and ‘mobile broadband’. The original bug (Bug #11028) is about DSL and the documentation to be added should be about how to connect via DSL on Tails. A lot of laptops still have modems built in.
I’m not sure how to proceed, the network-manager page says that ‘dial-up’ connections are not possible at all, but the users reported, that it worked in tails 1.x (and the gui is there, but not part of network-manager)

Dial-up is again different than DSL. Dial-up is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial-up_Internet_access and we have Feature #5913 about this.

I understand that the modems that are still sometimes built in laptops are for dial-up and not DSL. Honestly, I’ve never used or seen anybody connect to a DSL line directly without going through a Wi-Fi/DSL modem and router. But maybe it still doesn’t hurt to document nm-connection-editor for corner cases.

Do you still want to work on this?

well, i can only point to Bug #11028, which i didn’t report based on my own
expirience, but based on support requests. i cannot say if those
requests were corner cases or not. its definitly a regression from 1.x

i think its maybe better if someone who knows the terminology better
than i do takes that one.
