Description

This was reported to me by yawnbox from Tor and since I sometimes experience the same thing, I thought it needed a ticket.

Sometimes but not always, when sending an email for example, the top and bottom bars of GNOME Shell disappears for a second or two and then appears again, like if GNOME Shell was restarting.

It’s not a big deal as no information is lost but it’s a bit scary :)

Here is the log I got around the error (journalctl | grep gnome | grep -v "not in stack"):

  • related to Feature #9555: Include a pinentry GUI that's well integrated within GNOME added

GNOME Shell crashes (and is automatically restarted). Both logs show that the crash happens a dozen seconds or three after a pinentry dialog appeared, and GNOME Shell complains that pinentry is using X in a buggy way. It’s not clear, though, if the crash is triggered by the pinentry dialog showing up or being closed, or by something else we can’t see in the logs, that could be e.g. the Icedove dialog telling the user their email is being sent.

So, sajolida: please keep an eye on it, and report back if this ever happens when sending email that does not involve a pinentry dialog. If it does happen without pinentry being involved, then we’ll likely be looking at a GNOME Shell / Mutter bug. If it doesn’t, then we’ll see if that’s fixed by a newer pinentry (Feature #9555), by a newer GNOME Shell (Tails 3.0), or by a different pinentry (I’m pretty sure that pinentry-gnome3 would not trigger this problem, but we’ve recently decided to stick to pinentry-gtk2, so perhaps the deal is about trading UX problem for the other).

It happened to me again right now. Here is the log. And this time I was sending an unencrypted and unsigned email. The log starts differently but gnome-shell-classic.desktop still gets killed by signal 6.

This one comes from Clementine, that you’re using I think. Perhaps it handles its dialog windows in a buggy way, but still this should not crash GNOME Shell.

That’s pinentry-gtk2 again (even though for some reason it happens when you’re using Tor Launcher).

> It happened to me again right now. Here is the log. And this time I was sending an unencrypted and unsigned email. The log starts differently but gnome-shell-classic.desktop still gets killed by signal 6.

This time there’s nothing about pninentry in the posted logs. The interesting bit is:

> mutter:ERROR:x11/group.c:57:meta_group_new: assertion failed: (g_hash_table_lookup (display->groups_by_leader, &group_leader) == NULL)
> Mar 15 12:30:03 amnesia x-session-manager[30514]: WARNING: Application ‘gnome-shell-classic.desktop’ killed by signal 6
> Mar 15 12:30:03 amnesia gnome-session[30514]: x-session-manager[30514]: WARNING: Application ‘gnome-shell-classic.desktop’ killed by signal 6

My web searches about that mutter assertion failing result in no result whatsoever :/

The corresponding code is https://sources.debian.net/src/mutter/3.14.4-1%7Edeb8u1/src/x11/group.c/#L57. That assertion still exists on sid (https://sources.debian.net/src/mutter/3.20.1-1/src/x11/group.c/#L71) but the code before it has changed. Upstream, between 3.14.4 and 3.20.1, this file has seen only two commits:

These two commits apply cleanly on top of Jessie’s mutter. I have no clue if they can break anything else if applied in isolation (i.e. without the many, many other changes done on that codebase between 3.14.4 and them), but this can certainly be tested, and possibly pushed as a Jessie stable update in Debian. Given the bug is a relatively minor UX problem, I’m tempted to say it’s not worth the risk+effort, not bother more, and to flag this as “let’s check it’s fixed in Tails/Stretch”. What do you think?

So if I understand correctly, this behavior of GNOME Shell going off and on again is a symptom of GNOME Shell crashing, but this could be caused by different things. The one we see when sending an email is related to this mutter thingie and there’s good change it’s fixed in Stretch.

I’m also fine with saying that the risk+effort/benefit is too high to bother for Tails Jessie.

Marking as something to test for Tails 3.0, then?

Yes, you got it right :)

#14 Updated by FreezerFire 2016-06-25 14:21:36

I had noticed this same problem and thought it was nefarious Tor nodes initially.

Long story short I was playing with improved performance/load with Tails and noticed that after specifying the “toram” boot flag the gnome crash no longer occurs ever.

Can someone else confirm?

Possible Ideas:
- Location of data stabilizes gnome?
- Improved access time prevents a timing-related glitch in gnome?

#15 Updated by sajolida 2016-08-23 08:46:04

Yesterday, instead of a restart of the GNOME session I got a “Oh, no!” message with no way of getting my session back. I had to restart.

There are little chances that I can ever see this bug, so I’d like you to switch to Tails/Stretch once it is ready enough for you to use it often enough to possibly trigger this bug. We’re working on making feature/stretch pass our test suite so that people like you can start using it ASAP. So reassigning to you. Fair enough?

I think that’s probably a different issue, so please file a dedicated ticket and attach the content of the Journal around the time of the crash.

Yeap. I’m up for switching to Stretch as soon as the security-related
bits of the test suite all pass.

The session got blocked, so did Alt+Ctrl+F terminals so it was
impossible to get any information outside of the crash.

I’ve seen a very similar bug report on the Red Hat bug tracker. Interestingly, the reporters there are using TopIcons Plus or similar extensions, which is not surprising given we see something about ShellEmbeddedWindow in the logs. So I’ll mark this as blocked by Bug #8309.

I’ve just seen GNOME Shell crash with very similar log lines very early during the GNOME session initialization. In this case it doesn’t even restart, and gnome-session segfaults. I had to right-click on the desktop → Open Terminal and from there I could start gnome-shell.

Seen this again in the test suite today. In most of the other bug reports I’ve found elsewhere that expose the same assertion failure before the crash (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1474022, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1332015, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1539591), TopIcons Plus / TopIcons are involved, or at least an error about ShellTrayIcon is logged.
