So, Tails Installer is available in Ubuntu 16.04 as expected. It can be installed and it works but Ubuntu changed a lot their default utilities for installing software. Instead of “Ubuntu Software Center” there is not “Software & Updates” to configure sources and “Ubuntu Software” to install. So our instructions need to be rewritten. And, another but, Ubuntu Software can’t find Tails Installer when searching for tails.

This might be related to the previous indexing bug but sudo update-apt-xapian-index doesn’t exist anymore. This needs to be further investigated.

How fun!

I tried this both from the live version and an installed VM and in both cases “Ubuntu Software” couldn’t find Tails Installer after adding the PPA. So I think we should rewrite the Ubuntu instructions to use Synaptic, which works. I quickly looked for similar bug in “Ubuntu Software” or “GNOME Software” but couldn’t find anything. It is apparently too green to be reliable.

I bet our package is missing a file (AppStream description? anything else?) that’s needed to be listed in there.

That would work too.

  • Target version deleted (Tails_2.4)

Good idea! I’ll check how other PPAs behave then → Bug #11506.

What is the name of the package? I don’t find it on launchpad, searching for either “tails installer” or “tails-installer”.

So yes, GNOME Software only lists applications that include an AppStream descriptor. So until we have this it won’t shop up in Ubuntu. On top of this, Synaptic doesn’t show up in Ubuntu Software so for users who don’t have it installed, it doesn’t bring anything to tell them to go through Synaptic as they would have to go to the command line to install Synaptic in the first place. Amazing…

I consider this research ticket done now.
